TZ27 – Ideal Lighting for Better Video
The term "ideal lighting" may sound pretentious, but we're not here to impose style. Lighting is ideal when it does not conflict with your finished product; because post-production will not fix everything. Don't expect to Photoshop your movie as you would a photograph. At best, poor lighting can be bandaged in post; but the wound remains in the form of degraded video, like excess noise.
At the end of the episode, we talk about guerrilla filmmaking, and so decided to shoot ourselves talking inside of a Starbuck's. Please excuse the audio, as we only had one RF microphone (those suckers are expensive).

Nice Video. But I disagree with what you said “you can’t teach someone good lighting,” I think you can teach lighting, but a person won’t really “learn” lighting until they have experienced it.
Good description and use of examples!
You’re right, it certainly is possible to teach someone good lighting. I mainly said “We can’t teach you how to master lighting” in a show of modesty, because we ourselves haven’t mastered it yet.
But if we ever do, you can bet we’ll make an episode out of it.
Question, if you two were in the coffee shop, who was filming it? Since it definitely seemed hand held.
I like the talking about film stuff afterward. As for ‘film students’ getting a break, I think that the less professional looking rig you have, the less likely you are to be making money, and the less likely you are to get told off. I was shooting a scene last weekend and there was a cop who pulled over and just sat there watching us set up the cameras and stuff, then as soon as I brought out my boom pole with a dead cat windscreen, he came over and asked if we had a permit to film there. Then we had to leave
Just one rule, like one of you said, law enforcement personnel usually don’t know all the little rules about filming, and if you don’t act like anything’s wrong about it you usually won’t get repremanded. Even if a cop tells you that you aren’t allowed to film there, just say they you didn’t know, and they’ll usually let you keep doing it.
The rules about filming in public places are in a very grey area, where professional film makers cannot do so without a permit, but any person with a camcorder can make their YouTube videos on any street. The place in-between is very vague, and I’m not sure of the rules, but thats why ‘film students’ get more of a break than other people.
We got our Take Zer0 crew to shoot us, of course!
Hehe, it was actually just my sister and her boyfriend in the backseat of my car. We bought them drinks as payment
