Suddenly Lost – Official Music Video

A while back I received an email from a guy named Shem. He saw my Desert Skylapse on YouTube and loved it and wanted us to make a music video for his band, The Singing Pictures. The only problem was that The Singing Pictures was in a timezone that's eight hours away from where Peter and I live, quite difficult to shoot a music video that way. So this is what we came up with.

Any faithful followers of this blog will recognize the actress, Elaine Ramirez. I think we can all agree that she did a great job here (she put up with us using most of her free days) over the course of 5-6 days (I can't remember how many it actually was).

Some of the simplest shots actually took quite a long time. We shot about $60 worth of Polaroids. Peter devised a way to use our old tripod's vertical hand crank to do the vertical movements, while I push the dolly horizontally. We used about 200 pounds of sand bags to help make it smooth.

I just now got off a Skype call with Shem and Rhys (of The Singing Pictures). They absolutely seemed to love the video. This will look good on our portfolio, if I'm allowed to say so myself. Hopefully, we'll be working with them again in the near future! :)

I love seeing the “C” stand to hold the camera. I’ve been doing it now for a while.

Now i got to watch that music video….

Awesome work guys! Which DSLR are you shooting with? Im about ->| |<- close to running out to buy one! Your footage is amazing!

Hehe, I think I got the idea of using our C-stand as a tripod sort of thing from you :P

We’re using the 7D now, absolutely recommend it. I hear the T2i video quality is identical, though. I do miss our 5D (the quality was a bit better, especially in low light), but oh well.

Song is brilliant. Video, absolutely stunning. But Lainey, she’s on a whole other level of awesome — renders me totally speechless. Well done guys. I’m real proud :)

  • Great job guys. Love the behind the scenes photos. Would love to see more, and outtakes or behind the scenes video too.

Love the color, great use of (I’m guessing) fake chromatic aberrations.

Hey just a curious question. Are you guys paid to make these wonderful music videos? I’ve been trying to build up my portfolio with music videos/wedding videos, and am trying to make a living off of it as well.

Thanks! You guys are wonderful, keep up the good work! :D

For love or money. We weren’t paid to shoot this, but it will sure look nice on our portfolio! ;)

I know how hard it can be sometimes. Most filmmakers aren’t great businessmen/marketers.

I found myself smiling all the while through this, it’s so lovely!

I just watched ‘Suddenly Lost’ on Vimeo and I must say that I’m very impressed by the beautiful cinematography and postproduction work. You created a very delicate atmosphere…

Forgive my curiosity, but I need to ask you if there were any filters involved and what you did in post to give it that 70s kind of look? I’m experimenting with different looks for my upcoming short at the moment and I’m aiming for something similar to what you achieved here. If you choose not to make this info public, you could also write me an email if you like. Thanks. :)
