Friday Vlog 10: Rollerblades + Steadicam

| Download video / Stream to iPhone |

Posting this a little early cause I won't have time Friday morning.

So, Peter was busy editing a client's video on Monday, but he makes a couple small appearances in my vlog, so hopefully that makes up for it, for those of you who were missing him.

I hear today is annual delurking day or something, which means if you're a regular reader of anyone's blog, you're supposed to leave them a comment. Sounds like some sort of blogosphere marketing scheme, but feel free to leave a comment if you want. We'll write back.

Oh yeah, and here's our new website: TakeZeroProductions!

Happy Friday!

Peter was cracking up when you fell. hehe.
Great work with Anna! That 60p was so clean!
I wonder how you can adjust for what seems like a constant sway in thoes shots…

    • Sean says:

Hehe, it takes a lot of practice to use any Steadicam. If it were an actual short film, we would probably keep doing takes until it was perfect :)

  • Anna says:

    I like your found locations!

I wish we could’ve done another shot for the end…random man…and I look thattaway

Running looks really cool in 60p

    :D

  • Frankymook says:

That was beautiful. I was afraid for your camera more than I was for you when you fell, is that bad? Do you think I should sell my Panasonic dvx100b and purchase the 7d? None of the footage I have with it even comes close to the 7d.

    • Sean says:

That’s pretty much all I was thinking about as I fell too. Ended up with a little scratch on my elbow, camera and Steadicam were fine :)

And I’d say upgrading to a 7D is a wise choice. We used to have a DVX as well. Just be warned that the H.264 7D footage needs a pretty powerful computer to edit with. How much RAM does your computer have?

    • Frankymook says:

Its a Toshiba with about 2gigs of ram. I did not know that it needed certain requirements to be able to edit. What specs does my computer need to be able to handle the 7d, I hope I wont have to upgrade my computer as well?

    • Sean says:

Yeah, that’s pretty low, unfortunately. How fast is your processor? I have 8 gigs of RAM and a 2.6 ghz quad core processor and occasionally still struggle with editing. I recommend at least 2 gigs of RAM.

    • Frankymook says:

      Toshiba Satellite A215
      AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58 1.90 GHZ
2.00 GB 32 bit operating system
Probably not even close to what I need.

    • Sean says:

What editing software do you use? If you use Vegas, you’ll need to convert your footage first. If you use Premiere, you can pre-render the raw H.264 files, but playback will be choppy without a lot of RAM or a software decoder.

    • Frankymook says:

Adobe After Effect Cs3, I have Sony as well but have never used it. Im afraid of the 7d now.

  • Al says:

The slow-mo running at the end was cool. And Peter’s smile when you fell, that whole shot, was awesome.

  • Lainey says:

Oh, I just can’t wait to work with you guys again! Congratulations on your production company!

  • JohnBarker says:

Great video… I feel obliged to leave a comment now, Only Joking. What was the music you guys used in the short film? Also wishing you guys the best of luck with getting a studio!

    • Sean says:

Thanks, John. All the music was Jon Brion’s scores from various films. The one during the tracking shot segment was from one of my all time favorite films, Magnolia :)

  • Aundie says:

O.O that is like the best idea ever. Most people I know went for the wheelchair deal or the back of trucks..among other nonsense. Music videos are cool but when are you guys gonna fish out a real movie? Anna knows actors who will work for the experience alone..Those steadicam shots are perfect for an indie film feeling.. and 60p looks friggin sweeeeeet.

  • Uncle Al says:

    A couple of notes:
The 30p footage had your shadows in it next to Anna running; I am assuming, of course, that this was not a big hairy deal, since this was demonstration footage.
The 60p slo-mo was nice; the only thing I have to quibble about is that it seems to me to be one of those “Hey, Ma, watch me direct!” sort of things.
My opinion; worth every pfennig you paid for it.
Props to Anna; she doesn’t seem to me to be able to do a bad take.
    (Maybe it’s just me…)
    Cheers!
    Al B.

    • Sean says:

Yeah, I used that shot with our shadows intentionally so you guys could see how we were doing it. Hopefully we’ll work this into a real short film with Anna sometime soon :)

    • Uncle Al says:

I would definitely like to see that film.
Were I in the Greater Metropolitan Area of Ciudad de Maria, Reina de Los Angeles, I would offer to help… unfortunately, three thousand miles is a bit too far to commute.
      Cheers!
      Al B.

  • Jay S. says:

I just had to note this was an excellent vlog! Loved all the work you guys did with the skates and the camera!

  • Great Post. I have read quite a few posts on this topic and you done the best job. Keep it up!
